Saving Money

How to Save Money on Everyday Expenses

Why you should think about saving money

Saving money is one of the most important habits for financial stability and peace of mind. It gives you flexibility, security, and the ability to handle life’s unexpected moments.

Builds financial security – Savings act as a safety net for emergencies like job loss or car repairs, helping you avoid debt when unexpected costs happen.

Reduces stress – When you know you have money saved, this helps you feel calm and less worried about what might happen in the future.

Helps achieve goals – Whether you want to buy a house, go on a trip, start a business, or retire without worry, saving is the key to making these dreams happen.

Provides independence – Having your own savings gives you freedom to make choices without relying on credit or others for financial help.

Encourages better money habits – Saving teaches discipline, planning, and awareness of how you spend and manage your income.

Here are some ideas on saving money

Set clear goals

  • Decide what you’re saving for, maybe an emergency fund for unexpected bills, travel, or retirement.
  • Pick an exact amount you want to save. This will help you to stay motivated. Make sure to put this money in a separate account that you can access easily.

Track spending

  • Write down all your expenses for a month to understand where your money goes.
  • Look at areas where spending can be reduced or eliminated. For me, it was takeaways and popping to the shops out of boredom!

Cut unnecessary costs

  • Think about cancelling subscriptions or memberships that you do not use, like gyms, magazines, etc.
  • Try to pay off any debts more quickly. Especially those that have high interest rates. This way, you will save money on paying back the interest.
  • Use free music streaming services like Spotify – you do have to listen to adverts though. Yes, I find it annoying, but free is free!!!
  • For video games, stick to downloading the free ones.
  • Use the library if you have one local to you, instead of buying new books.
  • Consider cancelling Netflix, Sky TV, etc., and check out free download services like Pluto, Freeview, etc.? This tip really depends on what you like to watch.
  • Download free Kindle books – go to Amazon by searching for “free Kindle books”.
  • Use online videos to stay fit instead of going to the gym.
  • Consider buying used clothes and furniture at a charity shop or online marketplaces.
  • Feeling brave? Learn how to cut your hair/do your own nails with YouTube videos, or go to a college where the prices are lower, as students are learning.
  • Always compare insurance/internet/electric/mobile when up for renewal and try to lower all your monthly bills.
  • Could you carpool to work and save on fuel costs?
  • Practice preventive maintenance. Look after your appliances around your house. The link is below.

Food

  • Order your groceries online. This tip saves me so much money. If I physically go shopping, I WILL buy things on impulse!
  • Shop when your stomach is full. If you are hungry, that’s asking for trouble. Yes, I’m looking at you, doughnuts and cookies!!!
  • Take time to plan your meals for the week. This will help you avoid last-minute shopping.
  • Cut back on eating out and ordering takeaway. Pack your lunch to take to work.
  • Serve more vegetables than meat. Bulk up your vegetables, as they are a lot cheaper than meat.
  • Use frozen vegetables. They have the same nutrients as fresh, but they have a longer shelf life, which can reduce food waste.
  • Buy what’s in season and freeze it.
  • Try generic/supermarket own brands. Just by swapping my baked beans to the supermarket’s own brand, I save £0.30 per can. I use around 7 cans a month. That’s nearly £32 saving over the year on 1 product, and I like them better!
  • Drink more water and fewer energy drinks/pop/soda, and juice.
  • Organise your food cupboard so you can see what you already have to avoid buying duplicates.
  • Make a shopping list of items you need and stick to it when shopping. (I’ll be honest, I struggle with this one. If I only need a loaf of bread, I will come home with other stuff. But I am getting better!)
  • Start cooking from scratch and prep your meals. The link is below.

Reduce debt

  • Focus on paying off any debts more quickly. Especially those that have high interest rates. This way, you will save money on paying back the interest.
  • Avoid taking on new debt unless it’s really necessary.
  • Do your best to pay your bills on time to avoid late fees.

Shop smart

  • Take time to compare prices before making purchases. A quick online search can help you find the best price.
  • Use discounts, coupons, and cashback offers wisely. If you do need something, look online for discount codes. Search for the product or shop and type the word coupon. You might find a good deal at an online shop.
  • Buy in bulk when it makes sense to you. If you are sure that you will use all of it before the expiration date, and that you have the space for it.
  • Give yourself a 24-hour waiting period before making non-essential purchases.
  • Try to shop less often. The more often you go to the shops, the more chances you are giving yourself to buy things you don’t need.
  • Unsubscribe from shopping sites to reduce the temptation.
  • If you are tempted to shop online or go out to a shop to spend, take a moment to think about why you want to buy something. If you are just bored or sad, remember that shopping won’t really fill that void.
  • Embrace the idea of “Use it up, wear it out, make do or do without”. Sometimes, we need to change our way of thinking and realise that we can get by without buying new things.
