How to be More Sustainable

How to be More Sustainable at Home

Being more sustainable is important because it helps protect the planet, supports our communities, and creates a better future for everyone.

Protecting natural resources – Making sustainable choices cuts down on waste and saves water, energy, and raw materials so they’re available for future generations.

Reducing pollution – Choosing cleaner energy and cutting down on waste lowers air, water, and soil pollution, which is better for improving our health and ecosystems.

Fighting climate change – Sustainable choices, like reducing carbon emissions and using renewable energy, can help slow down global warming.

Supporting biodiversity – Sustainable practices in farming, fishing, and forestry help protect wildlife habitats and maintain ecological balance.

Saving money – Using energy-efficient products, reducing your waste, and being mindful about what we consume can lead to long-term cost savings.

Building stronger communities – Sustainability also encourages fair trade, ethical labour, and local production, supporting both people and the planet.

In short, being sustainable means living in a way that allows future generations to thrive tomorrow.

How to Be More Sustainable Room by Room

Creating an eco-friendlier home doesn’t require big changes all at once. A few small, mindful adjustments in each room can reduce waste, save energy, and make daily living more sustainable.

Kitchen

  • Try using reusable containers, jars, and beeswax wraps instead of plastic wrap.
  • Opt for reusable bags instead of re-sealable plastic bags.
  • Get into the habit of using a reusable water bottle.
  • Choose stainless steel, silicone, wood and cast iron in the kitchen when you buy something new and slowly attempt to get rid of all plastics and Teflon products.
  • Compost your food scraps and recycle packaging properly.
  • Plan your meals to help reduce food waste.
  • Cook more meals from scratch to reduce the plastic waste that comes with ready meals.
  • Choose energy-efficient appliances when the time comes to replace them.
  • Buy local, seasonal produce and think about reducing your meat consumption.
  • Use cloth napkins and dish towels instead of paper products.
  • Run the dishwasher only when full and use eco settings.

Bathroom

  • Try using refillable or solid toiletries like shampoo bars and soap bars.
  • Install a low-flow showerhead and faucet aerators to help save water.
  • Remember to turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving.
  • Choose bamboo toothbrushes and biodegradable floss.
  • Use reusable cotton pads or washcloths instead of disposable wipes.
  • Recycle empty toiletry containers or buy products from refill stations.
  • Pick eco-friendly cleaning products.
  • Slowly switch out all your shampoos/conditioners and body washes with non-toxic or homemade products.
  • Switch out all your makeup/face creams with non-toxic or homemade products.

Bedroom

  • Choose organic or sustainably sourced bedding and mattresses. (Warning: when I looked into buying one, it was out of my price range, but you might get a good sale!?)
  • Use energy-efficient bulbs and unplug chargers when you’re not using them.
  • Look for second-hand furniture or upcycle existing pieces.
  • Keep windows open for fresh air instead of relying on air conditioning.
  • Donate or repurpose any of your old clothes and textiles.
  • Add some plants to improve the air quality naturally.
  • Simplify your wardrobe: get rid of stuff you don’t wear and don’t replace anything unless you actually need it.

Living Room

  • Switch to LED lighting and use lamps instead of overhead lights when possible. I believe you can only buy LED lights in the UK, as halogen light bulbs were banned in September 2021.
  • Unplug electronics or use a power strip to reduce standby energy use.
  • Choose furniture made from reclaimed or sustainable materials. Bamboo, recycled wood, cork, rattan and cane are some examples of sustainable materials.
  • Decorate with second-hand or handmade items.
  • Use natural fabrics like cotton, linen, or wool for cushions and throws.
  • Adding indoor plants can purify the air and create a calming space.

Home Office

  • Try to go paperless by using digital notes and documents.
  • Print only when you really need to and use recycled paper.
  • Remember to turn off any electronics when not in use.
  • Choose a desk and chair made from sustainable materials.
  • Use natural light during the day to reduce your electricity use.
  • Recycle your printer cartridges and old electronics responsibly.

Laundry Room

  • Wash your clothes in cold water to save some energy.
  • Air-dry your clothes instead of using a dryer when possible. (I understand this depends on space and the good old weather!)
  • Use eco-friendly detergent and avoid fabric softeners with chemicals.
  • Consider making your own laundry detergent.
  • Try to wash with full loads to reduce water and energy waste.
  • Don’t forget to clean the lint filter regularly for better efficiency.
  • Invest in a high-efficiency washing machine if possible.
  • Switch to wool dryer balls instead of using single-use dryer sheets.

Entryway

  • Use a shoe rack to reduce the amount of dust and mud coming into your home.
  • Keep some reusable shopping bags and water bottles by the door.
  • Choose a doormat made from natural materials like coir or jute.

Garden or Balcony

  • Consider setting up a water butt to collect rainwater for watering your plants.
  • Grow herbs, vegetables, or pollinator-friendly flowers. This will provide food and shelter for bees and butterflies.
  • Compost organic waste to create natural fertiliser.
  • Avoid chemical pesticides and use natural alternatives like neem oil, peppermint, rosemary and garlic sprays.
  • Use solar-powered lights outdoors.
  • Reuse containers and pots for planting instead of buying new ones.

General Home Habits

  • Make sure to recycle and compost correctly.
  • Buy less stuff and choose quality over quantity.
  • Repair items instead of replacing them.
  • Support local and sustainable brands and businesses.
  • Be mindful of energy and water use throughout the home.

Sustainability starts with small, steady steps. By making mindful choices in each room, it’s possible to create a home that’s both eco-friendly and comfortable.
