Making the Most of Longer Days
Making the most of those longer, summer days is all about finding a good balance between getting things done, chilling out, and having fun.
Why You Should Maximise Longer Days
Boost your mood and energy – Maximising longer days can lift your mood and reduce feelings of tiredness. More daylight naturally boosts your serotonin levels, which can help you feel happier and more motivated.
Improve health and wellbeing – Spending time in natural light supports better sleep patterns, strengthens your immune system, and encourages physical activity. Even a short walk in the evening can make a big difference.
Increase productivity – With longer days, you have more time to get things done. Whether it’s tackling home projects, exercising, or doing your hobbies or trying new ones, the extra daylight helps you stay focused and energised.
Enjoy more outdoor time – The longer daylight hours mean more chances to connect with nature, socialise outdoors, or simply relax in the fresh air.
Strengthen social connections – With lighter evenings, it’s easier to plan meetings, barbecues, or walks with friends and family. Making use of the extra daylight helps you build stronger relationships and create lasting memories.
How to Maximise Longer Days
Start your day earlier.
- Take advantage of the extra daylight by waking up a little earlier. Use the quiet morning hours for exercise, reading, or planning your day before things get busy.
- With more daylight, it’s easy to stay up later, but try to keep a consistent bedtime routine to make sure you still get enough rest while making the most of brighter days.
Spend more time outdoors.
- You could go for morning or evening walks, get some gardening done, or enjoy meals outside.
- You can take advantage of the better weather to try something new, like hiking, gardening or an outdoor sport.
- Try to explore more locally, visit a different town, museum, woods or even a beach. Whatever is local to you and somewhere different. A different 4 walls is a great change!
Refresh your routine.
- Shift indoor activities to earlier in the day so you can enjoy the outdoors later. For example, do chores in the morning and relax outside in the evening, especially when the temperatures get high.
Let in natural light.
- Open your curtains or blinds when you wake up. Clean your windows and use lighter fabrics to make the most of the sunshine inside.
- The natural light can boost your mood and energy levels, helping you feel more productive and positive.
- Sit outside with friends or family and enjoy the sunsets or the stars, and chill out.
Plan outdoor gatherings.
- Organise a picnic, barbecue, or meet up in your garden or local park. Longer days are perfect for socialising with friends and family without feeling rushed.
- Or maybe make a little fire and roast marshmallows. Thinking about it, I have never made roasted marshmallows. I will defo have to try this if the weather is good in summer!
Tackle home projects.
- Take advantage of the extra daylight to complete DIY tasks or decluttering projects that you’ve been putting off. Natural light makes it easier to see details and stay motivated. And if you are painting, you can open all your windows wide to get rid of the smell and help the paint dry quicker.
Make the most of the season, as the longer days of spring and summer don’t last forever. Embracing them fully helps you appreciate the season, stay active, and create a sense of renewal before the shorter days come back.
