Why You Should Declutter Your Wardrobe and Keep It Simple

Saves time – When you declutter your wardrobe, getting dressed is quicker and easier since you only keep clothes you love and actually wear.

Reduces decision fatigue – With fewer options, there is less stress when choosing outfits, which helps you start your day with clarity and confidence.

Creates more space – Decluttering frees up room in your wardrobe, making it easier to see and access what you own.

Encourages mindful shopping – A simple wardrobe helps you to think about your new purchases and lets you focus on quality over quantity.

Boosts confidence – Wearing clothes that fit well and make you feel good can really improve your self-image and comfort.

Easier maintenance – Fewer clothes mean less laundry, less folding, and less clutter to manage.

Supports sustainability – By buying and keeping fewer items, you reduce waste and contribute to an eco-friendlier lifestyle.

How to Declutter Your Wardrobe

A simple wardrobe makes getting dressed easier, saves time, and reduces decision fatigue. By decluttering and picking out clothing thoughtfully, you can create a collection that shows your personal style, fits comfortably, and supports a calm, organised lifestyle.

Empty everything out

  • Take all your clothes out of your closet and drawers. Seeing everything at once helps you realise how much you actually own. This normally comes as a shock at the amount of cloth you have!

Sort by category

  • Group your clothes into categories—tops, trousers, dresses, shoes, accessories. This makes it easier to compare similar pieces and spot anything you have too much of.

Use the three or four-pile method:

  • Keep: Items worn often and loved.
  • Donate: Good-quality pieces no longer needed.
  • Sell: Good pieces no longer needed. I personally could not be bothered with taking a photo, putting it on a website, wrapping, sending, etc. However, I never buy anything that expensive! Be honest with yourself about whether you have the time and energy to do this.
  • Recycle: Worn-out or damaged items.

Keep only what you love and wear

  • Ask yourself:
  • Do I wear this often?
  • Does it fit well?
  • Do I feel confident in it?
  • Can you look after it well? For example, if it needs to be dried cleaned?
  • If it’s damaged, will I fix it?
  • If the answer is no, it’s time to pass it on. Try to be honest with yourself and keep only what fits, flatters, and feels right. Try the one-year rule: If it hasn’t been worn in the past year, the chances are you don’t need it.

Donate or sell unused items

  • Give away clothes in good condition or try to sell them online. This keeps your wardrobe light and gives your clothes a second life.
  • You could donate to local charities and support community organisations.
  • You can sell online using platforms like Vinted, eBay, or Depop.
  • Get your friends together and host a clothing swap and exchange items with friends and family.
  • For worn-out clothes, drop off at recycling points.

Focus on quality over quantity

  • Instead of buying into trends that fade fast, invest in classic, good-quality clothes.

Create a capsule wardrobe

  • Put together a small collection of essential items that can be mixed and matched—like a few tops, bottoms, jackets, and shoes that work for different occasions.
  • Start with basics like a plain T-shirt, jeans, neutral trousers, and simple dresses.
  • Then add layers, cardigans, jackets, and scarves for different seasons.
  • Try to limit duplicates and keep only one or two of similar items.

Organise by function

  • Arrange your clothes by type or how often you wear them. Keep everyday items within easy reach and store seasonal pieces separately.

Maintain Simplicity

  • Try the “One In, One Out” rule – When you pick up something new, make sure to get rid of one old item. This helps to keep clutter from coming back.
  • Shop carefully and choose pieces that go well with what you already have.
  • Avoid impulse buys and wait 24 hours before purchasing new clothing.

Maintain regularly

  • Check your wardrobe every few months to remove items you no longer wear and keep your wardrobe fresh and functional.

Build a wardrobe of clothes that you actually wear and like.  Or if you have changed your style, build a collection that represents your new style or life.
