Easy Guide – Getting Ready for a Video Interview
When applying for jobs, sometimes the employer will want to do a video interview. Sounds a bit nerve-wracking, especially if it’s your first time doing a video interview. Interviews are bad enough, but a video one ahhhh!
But do not be put off from going for a job you really want. While it stops the hassle of finding the place and dealing with transport, it still has its own issues to think about.
I’ve noticed that being prepared for a video interview really helps me feel calmer and takes some of the pressure off. Even if I don’t land the job, I can feel good knowing I gave it my all, and there’s usually a good reason for not getting it. Maybe the role or the company wasn’t the right fit, or perhaps the timing just wasn’t right. But it’s important to stay positive and trust that there’s a better opportunity out there for you.
I’m not an expert on interviews or recruitment, but over the years, I have gathered some information and advice that could help you out.
Here are a few things to consider before your interview.
Test Your Technology
- Check that your internet connection, webcam, and microphone work ahead of time.
- Make sure your device is fully charged or plugged in.
- Test the video platform (Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, etc.) before the interview, so you know how to join the call and use features like screen sharing or muting.
- Make sure to have the interviewer’s number in case you have a power cut or the video platform is down on the day of the interview.
Choose a Quiet, Well-Lit Space
- Choose a quiet room where you won’t be interrupted.
- Sit facing a window or light source so your face is clearly visible.
- Keep your background tidy and neutral — a plain wall or simple setting works best.
- You can also change your background to either blur out or use a background that is already uploaded on the video platform.
Dress Professionally
- Dress as you would for an in-person interview — smart or business casual is usually the standard.
- Avoid bright patterns or colours that can be distracting on camera.
- Make sure your clothes are clean and neat.
Prepare Your Setup
- Position your camera at eye level for natural eye contact.
- Close unnecessary tabs or apps to avoid distractions.
- Silence your notifications on your phone and computer.
Practise Your Answers
- Do a mock interview with a friend or in front of a mirror.
- Focus on speaking clearly, maintaining eye contact, and showing enthusiasm.
- Practising before an interview will help you feel more confident.
- Do a practice run and record yourself to check your tone, pace, and body language.
- Rehearse common interview questions, such as:
- “Tell me about yourself.”
- “What are your strengths and weaknesses?”
- “Why do you want to work here?”
- “Describe a time you solved a problem.”
Look into the company you are interviewing with
- Get to know about their products, services, and see if there is any recent news.
- Take a look at their website, social media, and any press releases.
Make sure you know the Job Role that you have applied for
- Read the job description that you applied for carefully.
- Figure out the main skills and experiences they’re looking for.
- Then, think about examples from your past work that match those requirements.
Maintain Good Body Language
- Sit up straight and look into the camera when you talk.
- Nod and smile to show that you are interested.
- Avoid fidgeting or looking away too much.
Have Notes Ready
- Keep your CV, job description, and a few bullet points nearby for reference.
- Avoid reading directly from notes — use them only as prompts, as you might end up sounding robotic!
Prepare Questions to Ask
- Have 2–3 thoughtful questions ready about the role or company, such as:
- “Why do you enjoy working here?”
- “What is a typical day like for someone in this position?”
- “What are the next steps in the hiring process?”
- This shows interest and preparation.
Log In Early
- Join the meeting 10-15 minutes before the scheduled time.
- Use that time to check your audio and video one last time.
Remember, it’s a two-way conversation — you’re also seeing if the company is right for you.
Being well-prepared and calm helps you come across as confident and remember to breathe!
