How to Create a Cosy and Safe Environment in Your Rental
Living on Your Own Safely.
Living on your own is definitely a great step toward independence, but safety should always be a priority. Here are some tips on living on your own safely.
Area
- Get to know your neighbours and neighbourhood. It doesn’t have to be a deep friendship. Be friendly and greet them. That way, they’ll feel comfortable telling you if something is wrong or feels off.
Secure your home
- You should always remember to lock your doors and close your windows.
- Don’t open the door unless you know who it is. Always look through the peepholes or the camera.
- Avoid letting strangers in. You can always invent a partner if they ask questions. “Do you live alone?” “My partner is just out at the moment.”
- Don’t let people know you’re not home (if you’re on holiday) or that you live by yourself. Keep those details off social media.
- Keep curtains closed at night, especially if you have the lights on.
- Be careful not to share your address online.
- Know your exits and create an exit plan should something happen, like a fire or intruder.
Things you can buy
- Consider installing a security system.
- Getting a motion sensor light outside can be helpful.
- Installing a doorbell camera is a good idea.
- Using a door jammer can add security.
Emergency preparedness
- Know your emergency contacts, like the police, the fire department, and your letting agent.
- Keep a first aid kit handy.
- Have a plan for power outages.
- Make sure you have a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket.
- Know how to turn off water and electricity in case of emergencies.
- Test your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detectors regularly.
Other
- Keep a spare key with a trusted friend or family member, not under the doormat.
- Shred your paperwork to protect against identity theft.
- Keep a torch/flashlight at the side of your bed along with your mobile phone.
- Know where your keys are before you get into bed.
Always trust your instincts. If something feels off, don’t hesitate to call for help.
How to Make a Rental Feel Like Home: Decorating Tips
Once you feel safe in your house, it’s time to make it feel like your home. Transforming your rental flat or house into something that feels like your own can take some time, but it is worth it!
Below are some tips that I think most people would be allowed to do. However, please read your lease to make sure you aren’t breaking any rules.
Start with a plan
Decide on a colour palette and style, whether that’s modern, bohemian, minimalist, or something else. This helps you stay focused and avoid those random purchases.
Use multi-functional furniture
Look for pieces that serve more than one job—like a sofa bed, storage ottoman, or foldable dining table.
DIY décor
Create your own wall art, give some old furniture a fresh coat of paint, or repurpose jars and bottles into vases. It’s affordable and adds a personal touch.
Charity and second-hand finds
Check out your local charity shops, car boots, and online marketplaces for unique, affordable furniture and decor.
Temporary upgrades
Use removable wallpaper or peel-and-stick tiles to update walls, countertops, and backsplashes without damaging any surfaces.
You can also buy window privacy film, which is a good way to give you privacy while letting in natural light.
Use adhesive hook/command picture strips
Use these to hang kitchen utensils behind kitchen cupboards or to hang canvas pictures or wall art.
Add over-door hooks
Use behind the door to hang coats or mirrors without having to drill holes.
Lighting matters
Consider adding some affordable floor or table lamps to create a cosy atmosphere. Warm lighting can make even a small space feel inviting.
Textiles for warmth
Layer rugs, throw blankets, and cushions to add texture and comfort. These can easily be swapped out to change the look seasonally.
Greenery
Add low-maintenance or fake plants to bring life and colour into your home.
Declutter and organise
Use baskets, shelves, and under-bed storage to keep things tidy. A clean, organised space always looks more put together.
Personal touches
Display photos, travel souvenirs, or handmade crafts to make your apartment feel like home without spending much.
