Spring Cleaning: A Fresh Start for Your Home
Why You Should Do a Spring Clean
Refresh your space – After months of closed windows and using your home a lot, your home can feel stuffy and a bit stale. A good spring clean and clearing out dust, dirt, and clutter can really leave your space feeling lighter and more welcoming.
Improve health and air quality – Over time, dust, allergens, and mould can build up. Doing a thorough clean helps reduce those irritants, which can improve your air quality and make your home healthier—especially if anyone has allergies.
Boost mental wellbeing – A tidy, organised home can help reduce stress and help you feel more in control. Plus, the act of cleaning itself can also be therapeutic, giving you a satisfying sense of accomplishment.
Create more space – Decluttering frees up room and helps you make better use of your space. You’ll find it easier to find things and keep your home organised.
Prepare for the new season – Spring cleaning marks a fresh start. It’s the perfect time to swap out winter items, bring in lighter fabrics, and open your windows to let in fresh air and sunshine.
Extend the life of your belongings – Regular deep cleaning helps maintain your furniture, appliances, and fabrics, saving you money in the long run by preventing wear and tear.
Encourage positive habits – Once your home is clean and organised, it’s easier to keep it tidy every day and stay motivated to keep things that way.
How to Spring Clean Your Home
Make a Plan
- Write a list of each room and note what needs some attention.
- Gather all the cleaning supplies that you will need. Like cloths, sprays, bin bags, boxes for donations, and storage containers.
- Try to pick a weekend or tackle one area per day to avoid getting overwhelmed.
Declutter First
- Take a look through every drawer, shelf, and cupboard.
- Sort items into four piles: keep, donate, sell, and bin.
- Be honest—if you haven’t used it in a year, it’s probably time to let it go.

After you have decluttered, it’s time to get going! Put on some music to keep you going! Personally, I recommend 80s pop, but everyone is different!! My poor neighbours have to listen to Rick Astley when I spring clean, ha ha!
Living room
- Dust your light fixtures, walls and skirting boards. Dusting reduces allergens and dust mites, which improves your air quality.
- Polish any furniture and any knick-knacks/photo frames.
- Wash your cushion covers and blankets.
- Vacuum all the floor and under furniture.
- Wipe down any doors and handles.
- Clean your windows and window sills. Use warm water and liquid dish soap.
Kitchen
- Dust your light fixtures, walls and skirting boards.
- Clean all your appliances inside and out, like the fridge, oven, air fryer, microwave, etc.
- Run a cleaning cycle on your washing machine to prevent odours and extend its lifespan.
- Wipe out your cupboards/cabinets and pantry.
- Defrost your freezer if the ice is more than ½ inch.
- Clean your sink and drains. Pour ½ cup of baking soda, then 1 cup of white vinegar. Let it settle for around 15 minutes, then pour boiling water to flush out fats and oils.
- Mop your floor using a mild detergent or a vinegar solution.
- Wipe down any doors and handles.
- Clean your windows and window sills. Use warm water and liquid dish soap.
Bathroom
- Dust your light fixtures, walls and skirting boards.
- Mop your floor using a mild detergent or a vinegar solution.
- Wash any bath mats.
- Clean your tiles to remove soap scum and mildew, and descale the taps.
- Use a glass cleaner to clean your mirrors.
- Give your toilet a good scrub using a toilet brush and bleach or baking soda.
- Replace any old towels or shower curtains.
- Wipe down doors and handles.
- Clean your windows and window sills if you have them. I don’t have one in my bathroom, I wish I did, though! I suppose it’s one less thing I don’t have to clean!
Bedrooms
- Dust your light fixtures, walls and skirting boards.
- Vacuum all the floor and under furniture.
- Wash your bedding.
- For the mattress, give it a vacuum and then flip or turn it. This improves its lifespan by preventing it from having uneven wear and sagging.
- Wipe down doors and handles.
- Clean your windows and window sills. Use warm water and liquid dish soap.
Add Finishing Touches
- Bring in some fresh flowers or plants.
- Open your windows for fresh air.
- Light a candle or use essential oils for a clean scent.
Once you have finished your spring clean, make sure you treat yourself to maybe a bottle of wine and a takeaway or some chocolates. You definitely deserve it after all that!
