Spring Cleaning: A Fresh Start for Your Home

Spring is the perfect time to give your home a fresh start. After spending months indoors during winter, dust, clutter and grime can quickly build up. A thorough spring clean not only makes your home look better, but it can also improve your wellbeing, create more space and leave your home feeling fresh for the months ahead. Here’s why spring cleaning is worth doing and a simple room-by-room guide to help you get started.

Why You Should Do a Spring Clean

Refresh your space – After months of closed windows and using your home a lot, your home can start to feel stuffy and stale.  A good spring clean and removing dust, dirt, and clutter can really leave your space feeling lighter and more welcoming.

Improve health and air quality – Over time, dust, allergens, and mould can build up. Doing a thorough clean helps reduce those irritants, which can improve your air quality and make your home healthier—especially if anyone has allergies.

Boost mental wellbeing – A tidy, organised home can help reduce stress and help you feel more in control. Plus, the act of cleaning itself can also be therapeutic, giving you a satisfying sense of accomplishment.

Create more space – Decluttering frees up room and helps you make better use of your space. You’ll find it easier to find things and keep your home organised.

Prepare for the new season – Spring cleaning marks a fresh start. It’s the perfect time to swap out winter items, bring in lighter fabrics, and open your windows to let in fresh air and sunshine.

Extend the life of your belongings – Regular deep cleaning helps maintain your furniture, appliances, and fabrics, saving you money in the long run by preventing wear and tear.

Encourage positive habits – Once your home is clean and organised, it’s easier to keep it tidy every day and stay motivated to keep things that way.

How long does a spring clean take?

Depending on the size of your home, a thorough spring clean usually takes between one and three days. Don’t feel you have to do everything at once—tackling one room each day is often more manageable.

How to Spring Clean Your Home

Make a Plan

  • Write a list of each room and note what needs some attention.
  • Gather all the cleaning supplies that you will need. Like cloths, sprays, bin bags, boxes for donations, and storage containers.
  • Try to pick a weekend or tackle one area per day to avoid getting overwhelmed.

Declutter First

  • Take a look through every drawer, shelf, and cupboard.
  • Sort items into four piles: keep, donate, sell, and bin.
  • Be honest—if you haven’t used it in a year, it’s probably time to let it go.
  • If you’re struggling to know what to keep, read my guide to decluttering your home before you start.

After you have decluttered, it’s time to get going! Put on your favourite playlist to make the job a little more enjoyable. Personally, I recommend 80s pop, but everyone is different!! My poor neighbours have probably heard more Rick Astley than they’d like every spring!

In every room

  • Dust light fittings, walls and skirting boards.
  • Wipe doors and handles.
  • Clean windows and windowsills using warm water and liquid dish soap where applicable.
  • Regular dusting helps remove dust and allergens from surfaces, which may improve indoor air quality.

Living room

  • Polish any furniture and any knick-knacks/photo frames.
  • Wash your cushion covers, throws and blankets.
  • Vacuum the floors, including underneath furniture.

Kitchen

  • Clean all your appliances inside and out, like the fridge, oven, air fryer, microwave, etc.
  • Run a cleaning cycle on your washing machine to prevent odours and extend its lifespan.
  • Wipe out your cupboards/cabinets and pantry.
  • Defrost your freezer if the ice is more than ½ inch.
  • Flush your sink with hot water regularly to help reduce grease build-up. For stubborn odours, use a suitable drain cleaner according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Mop your floor using a mild detergent or a vinegar solution.

Bathroom

  • Mop your floor using a mild detergent or a vinegar solution.
  • Wash any bath mats.
  • Clean your tiles to remove soap scum and mildew, and descale the taps.
  • Use a glass cleaner to clean your mirrors.
  • Give your toilet a good scrub using a toilet brush and bleach or baking soda.
  • Replace any old towels or shower curtains.

Bedrooms

  • Vacuum the floors, including underneath furniture.
  • Wash your bedding.
  • Rotate your mattress every three to six months. Only flip it if the manufacturer recommends it, as many modern mattresses are designed to be one-sided. This improves its lifespan by preventing it from having uneven wear and sagging.

Add Finishing Touches

  • Bring in some fresh flowers or plants.
  • Open your windows for fresh air.
  • Light a candle or use essential oils for a clean scent.
