Why You Should Declutter Your Wardrobe
Saves time – With fewer clothes to sort through, choosing an outfit becomes faster and easier. You’ll spend less time searching for something to wear and more time enjoying your day.
Reduces decision fatigue – Too many choices can be overwhelming. A simplified wardrobe makes everyday decisions easier, helping you start the day with less stress.
Creates more space – Decluttering frees up room in your wardrobe, making it easier to see and access what you own.
Encourages mindful shopping – When you know exactly what you own, you’re less likely to make impulse purchases. Instead, you’ll focus on buying quality pieces that complement your existing wardrobe.
Boosts your confidence – Keeping clothes that fit well and make you feel good can improve your confidence and ensure you always have something you enjoy wearing.
Makes Laundry Easier – Fewer clothes mean less washing, folding, ironing, and organising, making household chores more manageable.
Supports sustainability – By buying and keeping fewer items, you reduce waste and contribute to an eco-friendlier lifestyle.
How to Declutter Your Wardrobe
Decluttering doesn’t have to happen all at once. Take your time and work through these simple steps.
Empty everything out
- Take all your clothes out of your closet and drawers. Seeing everything at once helps you realise how much you actually own. This normally comes as a shock at the amount of cloth you have!
Sort by category
Group similar items together, such as:
- Tops
- Trousers
- Dresses
- Skirts
- Jumpers
- Jackets
- Shoes
- Accessories
Sorting by category makes it easier to spot duplicates and decide what you really need.
Use the three or four-pile method
- Keep: Items worn often and loved.
- Donate: Good-quality pieces no longer needed.
- Recycle: Worn-out or damaged items.
- Sell: Good pieces no longer needed.
I personally could not be bothered with taking a photo, putting it on a website, wrapping, sending, etc. However, I never buy anything that expensive! Be honest with yourself about whether you have the time and energy to do this.
Keep only what you love
Ask yourself:
- Do I wear this often?
- Does it fit well?
- Do I feel confident in it?
- Can you look after it well? For example, if it needs to be dried cleaned?
- If it’s damaged, will I fix it?
If the answer is no, it’s time to pass it on.
Try the one-year rule: If it hasn’t been worn in the past year, the chances are you don’t need it.
Give Clothes a Second Life
Rather than throwing away wearable clothing:
- Donate clothes in good condition to local charities and support community organisations.
- You can sell valuable pieces online using platforms like Vinted, eBay, or Depop.
- Get your friends together and host a clothing swap and exchange items with friends and family.
- For worn-out clothes, drop off at recycling points.
Choose on quality over quantity
Instead of buying fast fashion or following every trend, invest in well-made, timeless pieces that will last for years.
Quality clothing often saves money in the long run because it doesn’t need replacing as often.
Build a Capsule Wardrobe
A capsule wardrobe is a small collection of versatile clothing that works well together.
Start with essentials such as:
- Plain T-shirts
- Jeans
- Neutral trousers
- Comfortable dresses
- Cardigans
- Jackets
- A few pairs of shoes suitable for different occasions
Choose colours that coordinate easily so you can mix and match outfits without needing lots of clothes.
Organise Your Wardrobe
Arrange your clothes in a way that works for you.
You could organise them by:
- Clothing type
- Colour
- Season
- Frequency of use
Keep everyday items within easy reach and store seasonal clothing separately.
Keep it Simple
- Try the “One In, One Out” rule – When you pick up something new, make sure to get rid of one old item. This helps to keep clutter from coming back.
- Shop carefully and choose pieces that go well with what you already have.
- Avoid impulse buys and wait 24 hours before purchasing new clothing.
Maintain Regularly
- Every few months, spend 15–20 minutes checking your wardrobe.
- Remove anything you no longer wear, replace worn-out essentials, and keep your wardrobe organised.
Create a Wardrobe That Works for You
Your wardrobe should reflect your current lifestyle, not the person you were years ago.
Whether your style has changed, your job is different, or your life has moved on, build a collection of clothes that you genuinely enjoy wearing and that suit who you are today.

Whether you donate, sell, recycle, or swap your clothes, every item you pass on gives it a chance to be used again instead of ending up in landfill.
