Job Interview

How to Prepare for a Job Interview

When you apply for a job, the employer will want to do a job interview. Employers use the interview to see if you are a good fit for the role and the company. I’ve been there, and I know it can be stressful.  The nerves always hit my stomach and give me sweaty palms!

But I have found that preparing myself for the interview helps me to stay calmer and reduces some of the pressure.

Even if I don’t get the job, I know I tried my best, and there is probably a good reason I didn’t get that job.   Maybe the job or the company didn’t suit me, or the timing was wrong. But you then must be positive and believe that there is a better match out there for you.

I’m not an expert on interviews or recruitment, but over the years, I have gathered some information and advice that could help you out.

Preparing for an interview is about understanding the company, practising your answers, and presenting yourself confidently. These steps will help you get ready.

Here are a few things to consider before your interview.

Research the company you are interviewing with

  • Learn about their products, services, and any recent news.
  • Check their website, social media, and any press releases.
  • It will look better for you if you have some idea about the company and what it does.

Understand the Job Role that you have applied for

  • Read the job description that you applied for carefully.
  • Identify the key skills and experiences they’re looking for.
  • Think of examples where you have done the skills and have experience from your past work history that match those requirements.

Try to think about the questions they will ask and prepare your answers

  • Practise common interview questions like:
  • “Tell me about yourself.”
  • “What do you know about this company?”
  • “What are your strengths and weaknesses?”
  • “Why do you want to work at this company?”
  • “Why do you want this job?”
  • “Why are you looking to leave your current job?
  • “Describe a time you solved a problem.”

Prepare some questions to ask

  • Have 2–3 thoughtful questions ready, such as:
  • “Why do you enjoy working here?”
  • “What is a typical day like for someone in this position?”
  • “What are the next steps in the hiring process?”
  • “Is there anything about my CV or interview you would like me to clarify for you?”
  • Don’t ask questions like ” How much sick pay do I get? Or how many holidays do I get?” Yes, I know that they are the questions that we really want to ask! But wait until you get a job offer before asking!

Practise and rehearse

  • Do a mock interview with a friend or in front of a mirror.
  • Focus on speaking clearly, maintaining eye contact, and showing enthusiasm.
  • Practising before an interview will help you feel more confident.

Plan what you will wear

  • Dress appropriately for the company’s environment — smart or business casual is usually safe.
  • Make sure your clothes and shoes are clean, neat, and comfortable.

Prepare the practical details

  • Make sure you know the interview date, time, location, and who is doing the interview.
  • If you are unsure about the location of the company, do a test run before the interview date and see how long it takes to get there. Also, if you are using public transport, check online in case of any disruptions on that day.
  • Have the interviewers’ contact information in case something unexpected happens.
  • Bring copies of your CV, a notebook, and a pen if it’s in person.
  • Give yourself enough time to get there without rushing and being stressed, and arrive 10-15 minutes early.

Stay calm and positive

  • Take a few deep breaths before the interview.
  • Turn off your phone or put it on silent during the interview.

Remember, it’s a two-way conversation — you’re also seeing if the company is right for you.

If you are offered the role, ask about the start date, time and any salary expectations if you haven’t discussed this in the job interview. And you might want to ask for confirmation of the offer in writing.
