How to Prepare for a Video Interview

How to Prepare for a Video Interview

When applying for jobs, you may be invited to attend a video interview. If it’s your first one, it can feel a little daunting. Interviews are challenging enough without adding technology into the mix!

However, don’t let that put you off applying for a role you really want. While video interviews save the hassle of travelling and finding the interview location, they come with their own set of things to prepare for.

I’ve attended many interviews over the years, some of them over video, and I still get those familiar butterflies in my stomach. However, I’ve found that being well prepared helps reduce anxiety and allows me to focus on showing employers what I can offer.

In this guide, I’ll share practical video interview tips that can help you feel more confident, answer questions effectively, and give yourself the best chance of success.

Here are a few things to consider before your job interview.

Test Your Technology

Before the interview, make sure:

  • Check that your internet connection, webcam, and microphone work ahead of time.
  • Make sure your device is fully charged or plugged in.
  • Test the video platform (Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, etc.) before the interview, so you know how to join the call and use features like screen sharing or muting.
  • Make sure to have the interviewer’s number in case you have a power cut or the video platform is down on the day of the interview.

Choose a Quiet, Well-Lit Space

Your surroundings can make a big difference.

  • Choose a quiet room where you won’t be interrupted.
  • Sit facing a window or light source so your face is clearly visible.
  • Keep your background tidy and neutral — a plain wall or simple setting works best.
  • You can also change your background to either blur out or one of the built-in virtual backgrounds provided by the platform.

Dress Professionally

or one of the built-in virtual backgrounds provided by the platform.

  • Dress as you would for an in-person interview — smart or business casual is usually the standard.
  • Avoid bright patterns or colours that can be distracting on camera.
  • Make sure your clothes are clean, neat and presentable.

Prepare Your Setup

A few small adjustments can help you appear more professional.

  • Position your camera at eye level for natural eye contact.
  • Close unnecessary tabs or apps to avoid distractions.
  • Silence your notifications on your phone and computer.
  • Have a glass of water nearby if needed.

Practise Your Answers

Preparation builds confidence.

  • Conduct a mock interview with a friend or family member.
  • Record yourself to review your tone, pace, and body language.
  • Focus on speaking clearly and showing enthusiasm.
  • Practise maintaining eye contact by looking at the camera.

Common interview questions include:

  • Tell me about yourself.
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?
  • Why do you want to work here?
  • Describe a time you solved a problem.
  • Tell me about a challenge you faced and how you overcame it.

Research the Company

Take time to learn about the organisation before your interview.

  • Explore their website and social media channels.
  • Understand their products, services, and values.
  • Look for any recent news or developments involving the company.

Make sure you know the Job Role that you have applied for

  • Read the job description that you applied for carefully.
  • Figure out the main skills and experiences they’re looking for.
  • Think about examples from your previous work or life experiences that match those requirements.

Maintain Good Body Language

Your body language can communicate confidence and professionalism.

  • Sit up straight and look into the camera when you talk.
  • Nod and smile to show that you are interested.
  • Avoid fidgeting or frequently looking away from the screen.

Have Notes Ready

Having notes available can be helpful.

  • Keep a copy of your CV and the job description nearby.
  • Prepare a few bullet points to remind yourself of key achievements.
  • Avoid reading directly from notes — use them only as prompts, as you might end up sounding robotic!

Prepare Questions to Ask

Remember, an interview is a two-way conversation. Have 2–3 thoughtful questions ready about the role or company, such as:

  • “Why do you enjoy working here?”
  • “What is a typical day like for someone in this position?”
  • “What are the next steps in the hiring process?”

Having thoughtful questions prepared shows genuine interest and enthusiasm.

Log In Early

Aim to join the meeting 10–15 minutes before the scheduled start time.

  • Test your audio and video.
  • Check your internet connection.
  • Settle your nerves before the interview begins.

Final Thoughts

Remember, an interview isn’t just about the employer deciding whether you’re right for the role—it’s also your chance to decide whether the company is right for you.

Being well-prepared and calm helps you come across as confident and remember to breathe!
