How to Declutter Your Mind: A Step-by-Step Guide
Mental clutter builds up from constant information, worries, and unfinished tasks. Taking the time to declutter the mind can help you improve focus and stay calm. Decluttering your mind is an ongoing process of simplifying thoughts, focusing on what really matters, and creating space for calm and clarity.
When everything hits you at once, it can really stress you out and leave you feeling drained. Your thoughts might get all mixed up, making it hard to decide what to do or making you feel stuck.
This can actually make things worse as you are working hard, but you’re not making progress on anything! When this happens to me, I can end up being very busy but not really doing anything!
Taking the time to clear out that mental clutter can really help you find your balance and gain some clarity.
Why you should think about decluttering your mind
Reduces stress and anxiety – A cluttered mind feels restless and overwhelmed. Decluttering your thoughts helps quiet racing thoughts and promotes a sense of calm.
Improves focus and productivity – When your mind isn’t weighed down by distractions, it’s easier to concentrate and make decisions.
Encourages better sleep – A clear mind makes it easier to relax and fall asleep without overthinking.
Lower your risk of health issues – Increased stress can lead to a variety of health issues, both physical and mental.
Tips to declutter the mind.
Write things down.
- Keep a notebook for jotting down your thoughts and ideas, or use a journal to write down your personal thoughts and private reflections.
- Keep a list in the kitchen for anything you need from the supermarket.
- Keep a calendar with all your appointments and dates.
- Writing helps clear mental space and takes away the pressure to remember everything.
- If you are swamped with too many things to do, then create an action plan. With the most important first, and put everything else in order.
- If you have too many things to do and you feel like you need help, see if there is anyone you can ask. Whether it’s a friend, a family member or hiring a cleaner or something like that.
Limit information overload.
- Cut back on how much time is spent on news, social media, and notifications. Especially in times of world crisis. It seems to be never-ending these days. Make sure you show your brain good/happy things and not just what the media shows you.
- If your Facebook feed (or any media feed) is full of negative stuff, then unfollow negative accounts and follow more positive ones. Only click on happy and positive videos and news articles. This will then slowly change your algorithms, and it will show you a more balanced set of articles.
- Choose a few good/reliable websites and check them at set times.
Create routines.
- Set up daily habits for things like exercise and rest.
- Try to get some exercise in your routine. This can help you to reduce stress and anxiety.
- Try to meal prep so you don’t have to worry about what to eat every day, and you spend less time shopping daily.
- Try to avoid multitasking, as when you focus on too many things at once, it can stop you from being as productive and can make you feel stressed.
- Make sure you prioritise the important tasks each day instead of trying to do everything at once.
- Having predictable routines that reduce your decision fatigue and mental strain.
- Set boundaries and learn to say no to unnecessary commitments and people who drain your energy.
Declutter your environment.
- Keeping a tidy physical space helps to keep your mind clear; having a lot of clutter can add to your mental clutter.
- Having a good declutter can help your mind and help you feel less stressed, as there will be less to clean and a greater chance of finding things without going through lots of stuff.
- Try to remove distractions from your work or relaxation areas.
Take breaks and rest.
- Make sure you take regular breaks away from screens and technology.
- Get enough quality sleep to allow the brain to process and reset.
- Make sure you disconnect from the virtual world regularly and spend some time taking a walk in nature or just chilling in the sunshine.
Talk it out.
- Regularly share your thoughts with a friend, family member, or counsellor.
- Expressing your emotions, whether they are good or bad, helps release mental tension.
